Let s Go Camping Next Summer! By Marcus Hungerford In Oregon, there are many fun places to go camping and hiking. The first place to visit is Jubilee Lake. The campground is clean and has plenty of room for camping and has many fun things to do at the lake, like a rope swing, fishing, and there are even ducks to feed. A fun place to go hiking is at a place called the Eagle Cap Mountains. After a long car ride, and maybe a big hike, there are a bunch of lakes up in the mountains, so you can fish. To get to these lakes there are trails that will lead to them. Some may be a little harder to get to than others, but they re worth the hikes! There are a ton of amazing views in the wilderness up in the Eagle Cap Mountains. Ask your moms and dads to take you on a trip next spring and summer, when the weather is nice! What s it Like to Be a Teenager? By Destiny Warnekin My name is Destiny, I am a sophomore in high school, which is located right across the football field. When I was in elementary school, and middle school I thought high school would be the scariest experience of my life! Now that I'm here, it's not as bad as I thought. Some of the things a teenage packs around, including their books, their car keys and their phones! Photo by Destiny Warnekin Mirror Lake, located in the Eagle Cap Mountains. Photo by Marcus Hungerford It is true that high school students have more responsibilities but there s more freedom! There are many more activities you can do in high school like play in band, play a sport, be a leader, get a job, and drive a car. Don t be in a hurry to grow up! Being a teenager isn't that
different from being a kid in some ways. You are expected to do more when you're a teenager. We find ourselves as time goes by, and high school is a good place for that. Some people think being a teenager is harder than being a kid and other people may think it's easier. It's a bit of both. When you are a kid, you have may have fewer worries. When you get older that changes a lot. Homework is harder and they have to be turned in or you get a zero instead of missing recess. Place baking cups in each of 24 regular-size muffins cups In a large bowl, beat dry cake mix and carbonated beverage with electric mixer on low speed one minute, then on medium speed for two minutes (have an adult help you with this) Pour batter into a 13 x9 pan, greased and bake for 15 to 18 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center and supposed to come out clean Let cool for 1 hour before frosting the cupcakes. There s a lot to look forward to in high school, as long as you make it worthwhile. Growing up can be rough, but finding yourself is a journey worth all the bumps and bruises! Be active and high school will be fun! Fun Recipes for Fall Cooking By Destiny Warnekin It s always fun to cook and these recipes are delicious. Make sure that an adult is helping you when you use the stove and equipment in the kitchen! Soda Pop Cupcakes Ingredients: 1 box of Betty Crocker super moist white cake mix And 1 can (12 oz) carbonated beverage of choice Directions: Heat oven to 350 degrees f (have a parent help with this) Frosting for Soda Pop Cupcakes Ingredients: 8 oz whipped topping (Cool Whip) 30z package dry Jell-o Directions: Mix whipped topping and ½ a package of Jell-o. Frost the cooled cupcakes and eat! Roasted Pumpkin Seeds Ingredients: Pumpkin seeds Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1 tsp. Johnny s Seasoning Salt Cookie sheet for roasting seeds
Directions: Have an adult preheat oven 300 degrees F. If you are getting the seeds from a pumpkin, have an adult help you collect them then clean seeds by washing them in cool water (don t add soap) in a colander. To dry seeds: spread them out on cookie sheet and roast 30 minutes to dry them out Add Johhny s Seasoning Salt by tossing the seeds with olive oil, salt and your choice of spice. Return to the oven and bake until crisp and golden, about 20 more minutes. Let the seeds cool and enjoy. Package them in a Ziplock bag. Haylee Cordova: She is a 17-yearold senior who is a TA for Ms. Betts 3rd grade class. Her food is tacos and her subject is math she thinks adding and subtracting is fun! More of Our Elementary Helpers! By Morgan Dean In the last edition there were four TA's, Ethan, Garrett, Travis, and Shaw. Mitchell Young: Mitchell is 16 years old and a junior. At the elementar y school he TA s 3rd grade grammar and P.E., which also happens to be his subject. Like Haylee, Mitchell likes tacos too, especially ones that have lots of hot sauce on top! This week we are introducing three new ones: Haylee Cordova, Mitchell Young and Tucker Arnold.
Tucker Arnold: Tucker is 17 years old and is a senior. He TA s for Mrs. Betts 3rd grade class. His subject is also P.E His food is deer, which he hunts for every fall. When he hunts for deer, he lives in the woods at a camp and loves being outdoors. Though they are the only mammal in the world that cannot jump, that does not affect the joyful animal. The article also discusses when communicating with others, elephants use purring, the same as a cat when they are happy. Caring would be how most would describe these humongous creatures. When gone from a group for an extended amount of time, elephants will reunite with a hug! Yes, a hug! When coming back the elephants will put their trunks around the back of another and bring them in for what we would consider a hug. Elephants are Amazing Creatures! By Keree Graves Elephants are enormous land animals, the biggest in the world to be exact. An article from "Mikelle Designs Happy Elephant" explains many facts about elephants. From shoulder to toe, an elephant stands at thirteen feet tall and can weigh up to twenty five thousand pounds. Most of their weight comes from body parts, such as their heart; an elephant's heart weighs from a range of twenty seven to forty nine pounds. Another heavy part would be their mouth. Elephants have four molars, one on each side top and bottom, weighing five pounds each and each is the size of a brick! Keree s stuffed elephants, her animals! Photo by Keree Graves One distinctive feature on an elephant would be the trunk. The trunk has more than forty thousand muscles. Most would think that the trunk is mostly used to move bigger objects; though this is one function lifting over one thousand pounds, elephants have an acute sense of touch. They are able to sense the shape, size, and temperature of an object. Also, elephants lift their trunks to get a better smell of objects. When swimming at a deeper length, elephant s use their trunks as a snorkel to breath.
As time goes on elephants will always be considered one of the happiest and smartest animals. Having a brain four times bigger than the human brain, making them the best at remembering others. If you are still interested go to Happyelephantcontest.com.
