What a turn out at our meeting on the 23 rd April! Huberta was the attraction quite the HIPPO! 13 visitors potential new members were welcomed by Chris. Jean Marx-Engelbrecht was very grateful for the support from our club with the launch of her 2 nd book! 2 FOR STARTERS... The only thing that stands between a person and what they want from life is often the Will to try it and the Faith to believe it s possible FAITH = FULL ASSURANCE IN THE HEART. OF INTEREST A white child, she was born in Namibia to French wildlife photographer parents, and grew up in Africa. Tippi spent her whole childhood playing with wild animals including lion cubs, a mongoose, a snake, a cheetah, baby zebra, giraffes and crocodiles.

3 The little girl saw nothing unusual about her company: I don't have friends here. Because I never see children. So the animals are my friends, she once said. Tippi is now 23 years old, and the only child to wildlife photographer parents Sylvie Robert and Alain Degre, who published her photos in a book called "Tippi of Africa".. CLUB NEWS

7 REUSE,RECYCLE,REFUSE! Recycling - What else can I do? Choose longer life, energy-efficient, refillable and rechargeable products. Practice saying 'no thank you' when offered a bag or product you don't need. Buy, and use refills wherever and whenever you can. Buy recycled products wherever you can (check the labels). Local schools often use old catalogues, magazines etc. If you think something you have bought is over packaged, write to the manufacturer and ask why! How much waste do you produce, weekly? Set a target to reduce. If you have to throw something away, squash it as small as you can. Remember, if it takes up less space in your bin, it will take up less space in the landfill site. WATER IS PRECIOUS! SAVE! SAVE! SAVE! WHAT IS YOUR WATER FOOTPRINT LIKE?? CAT Close a Tap! Twitter The Cape eagle owl (Gevelkte ooruil) Call; V o-vo-hoo (Loud descending to mellow hoot). Uncommon to rare. Owls have been designed, by almighty God, for night flight having both very large eyes that give them very good night sight and specially designed feathers for almost silent flight, both are necessary for night hunting of prey. There are a number of myths and old wives tales and superstitious witchcraft pertaining to owls. Unfortunately some attach God like characteristics to these birds. When all they are doing is calling for a mate or to a mate.

8 ARM CHAIR TRAVEL IT S ALL IN THE MIND! IMAGINATION We, who live here, are very lucky to be citizens of this great African nation. ALL ABOARD A shout from somewhere at the back of the bus Were off! Our driver Johan from Majestic Tours drove us safely through to our destination The Alpaca Loom in Paarl. Everyone savoured the magnificent outing; Rolling estates into the mountains, covering the land like a blanket of shades of green in Summer, and in Winter take on a different mantle of autumn orange and dark plum colours all the way to the Alpaca Loom Farm and Spice Route. Weather wise we could not have had a more perfect day we were so blessed. We received a warm welcome and were ushered into a large work-room and shop. Although we did not see the spinning of the wool, it was interesting to watch the weavers at work( one with her sleeping baby tied on her back.) Shawls, beanies and garments woven in different designs, mostly in soft hues of the animals wool.

9 We then relaxed on the broad balcony and were treated to lovely vistas, a short talk about different wools (we could feel the samples)while enjoying being served fresh muffins and coffee or tea (a joke later was that perhaps the Alpaca droppings were dried and grounded for a unique coffee!?) I revelled in feeding the friendly Alpacas. Their fur is incredibly soft. I bought a bag of fur and some wool and love digging my hands into the fur in the bag. For overseas tourists, prices reasonable-for South Africans; rather pricey but one has the joy of buying South African local is lekker! The owner Dietmar Keil, the enthusiastic owner told us a heart-warming story of leaving Namibia to come here to care for his grandmother. He and his German-born wife Kerstin started with a only a few and now have more than 350! One can feel their love for the animals, which the Alpacas reciprocate. A soft humming sound is one way of their ability to communicate and they are as inquisitive of their guests as they are of them. They are related to the camel family, and having had a special encounter with a camel endeared me even more to the beautiful creatures. Next stop was the sprawling Spice Route complex of old Cape Dutch and new architecture. Elegant lawns-some artificial, ancient and younger trees and lovely landscaping. Our group split up to do their own investigating of the Brewery, Chocolate factory you just cannot resist- even a Grappa distillery. All exhausted spiritually and mentally refreshed we arrived home safely thanks to Johan for his consideration and caring shown to all our gratitude! To David for organizing our outing we are grateful to be members of SAARP Thank you Connie for your contribution and to those who could not make this outing we hope you enjoyed the written version! LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE Paddy was in New York. He stands patiently waiting and watching the traffic cop on a busy pedestrian-crossing. The cop stopped the flow of traffic and shouted Okay,

10 pedestrians. Then he d allow the traffic to pass. He d done this several times and Paddy still stood on the sidewalk. After the cop had shouted Pedestrians! for the tenth time, Paddy went over to him and said, Is it not about time ye let the Catholics across? A man takes his Rottweiler to the vet and says, "My dog's cross-eyed, is there anything you can do?"let's have a look at him." says the vet. So he picks the dog up and examines his eyes. Finally, he says "I'm going to have to put him down." "Just because he's cross-eyed?" asks the man. "No, because he's really heavy," says the vet. Dolly Parton and the Queen, were at the pearly gates. Dolly was asked what do you have that will let you in? She promptly lifted her blouse, and showed her two greatest assets! Before her turn, the Queen asked to go to the loo. She did her thing and flushed the toilet. She was immediately ushered through the gates, to the indignation of Dolly. 12 lady was being shown the benefits of a kindle. Finally she wait until it responded, er much as I m tempted, I think I ll comes out in paperback. PARTING SHOT I m Fine There s nothing whatever the matter with me. I m just as healthy as can be. I have arthritis in both my knees. And when I talk, I talk with a wheeze. My hearing is poor, my sight is dim. Most everything seems to be out of trim. But I m awfully well for the shape I m in. LAST WORD
