4 RELATED THEMES: Colonial Era, Mayflower Compact, Pilgrims, Multiple Perspectives, Drama LITERATURE CONNECTION: Harness, Cheryl. Three Young Pilgrims. Bradbury Press Mary, Remember, and Bartholomew Allerton travel from England aboard the Mayflower to settle in the New World. This fictionalized account describes the hardships they endured during the voyage and the struggles in their first year in the Plymouth colony. NATIONAL STANDARDS CORRELATIONS IRA/NCTE 3: Students apply a wide range of strategies to comprehend, interpret, evaluate, and appreciate texts. They draw on their prior experience, their interactions with other readers and writers, their knowledge of word meaning and of other texts, their word identification strategies, and their understanding of textual features (e.g., sound-letter correspondence, sentence structure, context, graphics). NCSS IIc: (Time, Continuity, & Change) identify and describe selected historical periods and patterns of change within and across cultures, such as the rise of civilizations, the development of transportation systems, the growth and breakdown of colonial systems, and others NSH Standard 2E: (Historical Comprehension) Read historical narratives imaginatively, taking into account what the narrative reveals of the humanity of the individuals and groups involved their probable values, outlook, motives, hopes, fears, strengths, and weaknesses. ACTIVITY ONE Primary Source: ( The Mayflower Compact, The History Place) Directions: The original Mayflower Compact, which established the first selfgovernment in America, no longer exists. Students examine a handwritten copy of the document recorded in William Bradford s Of Plimoth Plantation. They identify the pledges and promises made by the signers of the compact. Working in teams, students create classroom compacts following the format of the Mayflower Compact. ACTIVITY TWO Primary Source: ( Bradford s History Of Plimoth Plantation, Wisconsin Historical Society) Directions: One hundred two Mayflower passengers landed in 1620 and immediately began building the first colonial settlement in New England. Students examine William Bradford s account of the passengers first 30 years in Plymouth and select a passenger to portray. They research the daily life and culture of Plymouth colony. Using their research as a basis for their answers, students, in character, are interviewed in a live talk show format. 6
5 (cont.) ACTIVITY THREE Primary Source: ( Bradford s History Of Plimoth Plantation, Wisconsin Historical Society) Directions: In 1620, the Mayflower brought 102 settlers to Plymouth Bay. Not everyone aboard the ship was a Pilgrim seeking religious freedom. The majority of passengers were common people hoping to make a better life in the New World. Students examine Bradford s, Of Plimoth Plantation. They research the history of the original settlers and daily life in colonial Plymouth. In a living history day presentation, students assume the persona of an original settler going about daily life. Bookshelf Resources Armentrout, David and Patricia. The Mayflower Compact.
