3 Introduction The Schools Egg Laying Competition, conducted by The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV), gives students a hands-on experience raising and caring for young poultry, giving them an insight into what is required of producers in the modern commercial poultry industry. Project outline The competition gives schools a great opportunity to raise commercial poultry from chickens through to laying pullets and compare their success against other schools and international commercial performance standards. Each of the competing schools receives five (5) young Hy-Line Brown Commercial pullets in early June, which they will feed and care for. Schools will track the performance of the pullets through to delivery of their best three birds to the Royal Melbourne Show in September Essential dates Date Monday 22 January Friday 30 March June (Date TBC) Friday 21 September Saturday 22 September Sunday 23 September Tuesday 2 October Wednesday 3 October Item Entries Open. All schools are invited to submit their entries Entries Close. All entry forms must be submitted by 5pm Five (5) birds are delivered to your school. Birds will be approximately 6-10 weeks old and will already be vaccinated. Schools deliver birds to Melbourne Showgrounds. More information will be supplied closer to the date. Judging Presentation of exhibits (birds) Project Competition Egg Laying competition commences, RASV staff collect eggs daily and place in display cabinet. Judging Egg Laying Awards Presentation Livestock Pavilion Overall Winner announced Schools can collect their birds after presentation of the overall winner has been conducted Final day for Schools to collect their birds 10am 12pm 2
4 Poultry care 1. Preparing for the arrival of your birds Creation of a chicken coop that is no smaller than 1.5m x 2m in size Coops must be big enough for the chickens to live comfortably, flap their wings, move about freely and make a nest. Chicken coops must provide the basic protection and shelter with a floor, walls, a roof, doors and windows/vents. 2. Feed and care Hygiene of the birds and the coop is critical for maintaining good poultry health. Changeable flooring such as woodchips, sawdust or sand and adequate ventilation are important elements to incorporate into your coop design. Chickens famously love to peck at their food all day long, so it is perfectly acceptable to leave their food bowls topped up with food. To prevent pest infestations, it is advisable to feed the chickens in the morning and evening Keeping track of how much you feed your chickens will help you maximise egg production. Allow your chickens plenty of access to grassy pastures during the day and they will lay you eggs with golden yolks and substantial whites. 3. Transporting your birds Poultry should be carefully loaded in to clean cages or crates. The minimum standard cage and crate dimensions are 20cm wide and 25cm high per bird. Cages/crates should have ridged floors and be designed to prevent any part of the bird protruding during travel. Cages/crates should be well ventilated and of sufficient height to allow birds to stand. 3
5 Tasks for submission 1. Presentation of exhibits Schools will receive five pullets that are approximately 6-10 weeks old. Schools are required to raise their birds to 27 weeks before selecting their three best pullets for competition in the Royal Melbourne Show. Pullets must be of good health and be laying prior to their arrival at Melbourne Showgrounds on Friday 21 September. Judging of the three birds will occur on Saturday 22 September. 2. Egg laying Each day through the Show, eggs will be collected and placed on display. Egg judging will occur on Tuesday 2 October, using standard egg judging criteria. The exhibit s ability to produce a uniform production of eggs to a commercial standard and egg quality form part of the judging criteria. 3. Worksheets and Poster A blank worksheet will be provided as a guideline for students to complete. Each project will be judged by a representative from the commercial industry. These records must contain the following details: Survivability = number of day old chicks acquired % total mortality Average Body Weight = Total body weight / number of birds Feed Conversion = Total feed used (kg) total body weight (kg) Average Age = Age of chicks at day zero (day of hatch) Each entry should be accompanied by an A1 poster that is capable of being mounted on a wall in the Livestock Pavilion as part of the Schools Poultry display. The design and content on your poster will be at your discretion but must be neat and presentable. RASV suggest that your poster should identify the school/team and present results on the: Chicken survival Weight gain Feed conversion Photographs, graphs and charts should be included wherever possible. Each poster will be displayed for the duration of the Royal Melbourne Show and the lettering and other information should be of sufficient size and clarity for the public to read from a distance of up to 2 metres. 4
6 Schools Poultry Film Awards NEW In 2018 the RASV are introducing an exciting new class for students to get in touch with their creative side. The class is based mainly around the upbringing of the pullets and their journey to the Melbourne Show. Students are invited to submit a short video to be displayed alongside the animals at the Show, helping to connect with the general public and highlight what the Schools Poultry Competition achieves. Students will be required to submit a video outlining what they do on a day to day basis to care for the pullets and prepare them for Show. Content could include but is not limited to: Pen setup ready for pullet s arrival, pullets arriving, feeding, cleaning, weighing, collecting eggs, general care of the animals and learning experiences for the students. Primary School Entries: The video should last between 1 2 minutes and can be in whatever format achievable by students. Secondary School Entries: The video should last between 2 3 minutes and can be in any format. The more creative the video the better. All videos will be judged based on the creativity of the content. It is important to keep in mind that the viewers may not know what the Schools Poultry competition is about and the objective of this class is to appeal to the broader public, not necessarily someone with poultry experience. Thanks to the support of Australian Eggs both Primary and Secondary Film Award classes have a $50 cash prize available for 1 st place. The videos will be judged by a representative of the RASV Marketing team. Submission: The completed video will be required to be delivered prior to the beginning of the Royal Melbourne Show. Final copies should be shared as a soft copy via dropbox or a similar system. If this format is not suitable entries can also be sent as a physical copy on USB or disk to: Poultry Section Melbourne Showgrounds Epsom Road Ascot Vale VIC 3032 The video is required to be submitted by no later than 29 August Please note: the film awards are an additional class and the videos cannot be used in lieu of the poster. The school must ensure that permission has been received for use of images from all participants in the video prior to submission of entry into the competition. 5
