30 Breeding budgies for fun and colour Keith Hunt (Fred Wright) Not everyone would want to breed budgerigars for the show bench - and why should they? We all enter the hobby because we are attracted to the colours, the active and character of the budgies themselves together with the fact they are not especially expensive and they are free-breeders. t's unfortunate that all clubs and societies seem to have this builtin wi to encourage all budgie breeders to show what they have bred so as to compete with their fellow breeders. t's my understanding that most new keepers and breeders of budgies ant to breed, they love watching them be active in a flight or aviary and they are fascinated by the colours. Let's help these breeders to enjoy their budgies even more. Breeding for Fun Budgies are easy to breed. They nest in a wooden or cardboard box and its all based around a 200mm x 25mm concave placed at the bottom. There is an entrance hole - usually at the side, as high as possible so the chicks don't fall out too early. The diameter of the hole is about 50mm. Small, fine feathered budgies are prolific in their breeding. They seem to like a bit of activity around them and breed better is there are a number of pairs in the same vicinity. Once the birds are put together, eggs can be expected within 0-4 days. The hen will lay on alternate days until she has about 6 or 7 eggs. The incubation period is 8 days so and if all goes well, chicks will start to hatch. The hen will do all the rearing with a bit of help from the cock. t always helps to add some form of softfood or sometimes called eggfood a couple of times a day for the hen to feed her chicks. Simply it's a high-protein egg mix which will help the chicks to grow. After a bit more than two weeks the colour of the babies will become obvious, at 30 days the chicks will come from the nest fully

32 feathered and either huddle in the corner of the cage for a few days or perch. The next few days will be a time when the cock and hen teach the babies to find the food and within a week, they will be feeding themselves and be fully independent. All first time breeders are fascinated by the colours that start to appear in the nestboxes. t's one of the main joys of breeding budgies. t never matters what colours are paired together - forget the genetics for now - just breed with birds of the colours you like and are able to purchase. Colony v cage breeding There are two ways of breeding budgies - in a colony which is an aviary with more nest boxes than you have hens - all placed at the same height. Same height as the birds will "fight" for the highest box. There might well be a bit of agro while the birds find their own mates but this can be overcome by placing each pair separately in a cage for a week before they are released into the aviary. This is called "bonding" and tends to overcome any squabbling about selecting partners. The alternative is to cage breed in separate cages for each pair, however, this is far less entertaining than being able to watch the birds fly about, chasing each other and bouncing through a nestbox hole - and disappearing. Five or even six pairs, with eight nest boxes is a perfect start for any new budgie-keeper. Feeding Offer a simple budgie mix. t's usually half canary seed and half millet. The birds need grit, a piece of cuttlefish - may be an iodine/mineral block and regular fresh water, not forgetting that softfood occasionally before the breeding so the hens get used to it and a couple of times a day when there are chicks to be reared. Breeding for Pets f breeding goes well it's difficult to keep everything we breed. Set yourself up to sell some of the babies as pets. There is a constant

34 demand for pets and work on the theory that every bird sold is a bag of seed. There is no doubt that cocks make the best pets if they are taken early. That works well as you will need hens to breed with the following year. Keep the baby birds yourself if you like the colours and sell the rest - remembering to keep back plenty of young hens for the following year. Selling them Selling pets is not as difficult as you might think. Advertise in a local newsagent or on a noticeboard somewhere locally. t's easier these days to advertise on the internet and there are various selling websites. t might be for less money but its quick and efficient, but pet shops always want baby budgies to sell. f you have babies in the nest, ring a couple of the local shops and try to set something up - but it's more financially rewarding to sell privately. Don't forget to get a few small boxes to allow buyers to carry the bird away, as they don't always bring a cage. Just sit back and enjoy We breed budgies for pleasure - and if we sell a few as pets - it's a bonus. Sitting in a garden watching a colony of breeding budgies can bring so much joy. We live in a world where there are great pressures - family, work and economic. Breed a few budgies for fun - enjoy them, and forget clubs with all their internal politics and don't even consider shows. 38 Balance in the Exhibition Budgerigar 'f they disagree with many of the thlngs say they are free to say so; do not ask for approval; merely state views based on my own experiences in the past, make neither excuses nor please for approval; this book is utterly personal, honest and hope instructive." These words are taken from the book 'Exhibition Budgerigars' by Dr M.D.S. Annour, a Cage Bird publication suspect from the 950' s. could not have chosen better words for this or any previous or future articles / presentations that have written/produced or might write/produce on this wonderful hobby that we are fortunate enough to have embraced. During this article, a further quote will be 'borrowed' from this recently 'gifted to me' book to reinforce some of my beliefs. Some recent (and not so recent) judging appointments and discussions and aviary visits post these appointments has prompted me to reach out to the fancy to revisit the intent of breeding the Exhibition Budgerigar withln Australia (or parts thereof). There were too many birds on the bench and in the aviaries to ignore this subject, it was as if the breeders were encouraged by past petforrnances to bench this style of bird, do not believe this for one second, suggest that they were not discouraged and therein lays the issue, if the latter were to be true. The intent is not to insult, but to encourage fanciers and judges alike to view The Australian National Standard pictorial, read and embrace the pages that encompass TYPE. t is worth looking at pages 9, 20 and 22 as amended December 200. BG S BEAUTFUL seems to be the catch cry for some. Please, please reassess and do not forget the beauty of the bird and its need for balance. We (the judge) in effect influence the direction the fancy takes thus we need to be serious and responsible. Wrong decisions relay wrong messages and potential confusion. An exhibitor wins one week and the next is given the message that their bird is not a show bird nor should it be bred with. Wow, what a kick in the guts. Worse still, what if the exhibitor is content with the win of the previous week is full of glory and nurtures this style/shape of bird. will take the kick in the guts any day. did in my infancy in the fancy, trooped off to a show in Ballarat with this super group of youngsters ( thought) and got hammered. Reg Pullen, the wonderful man he was, suggested in a nice way the birds were so wrong that would need to commence again. could have sulked but did not, it inspired me to review and redirect. saw this as great feedback and a great experience. My second quote from the aforementioned book covers a number of areas that intended to discuss and is worded so petfectly that include it as part of tlle article to best explain, in part my dilemma with the 'change' that is sadly creeping onto the show bench. 'By Type we mean symmetry, this proportion between each part and the whole, this balance; without this balanced symmetry no budgerigar is truly an exhibition budgerigar; no matter how wonderful the colour, how big the whole bird, how big the spots; without petfection of outline and beautiful

40 modelling, no budgerigar can be altogether desirable; this is THE MAJOR SHOW PONT, and no budgerigar which carries perfection of shape is a bad budgerigar. t may have other failings, but it is over 50 per cent perfect if it is the possessor of flawless symmetry. This has nothing to do with size and here is criticism right at the beginning, constructive criticism, however. The Scale of Points, so far as can ascertain at the time of writing, still couples size and shape, even putting "size" before "shape", as if it were more important. This is wrong! There is no correlation or interdependence between size and shape. A bndgerigar may be perfect in type without being big, and, indeed, have seen so many big budgerigars which failed in shapeliness that even consider that size much beyond normal detracts from the beauty of a budgerigar. ' Remember this was all written back in the 950's or thereabouts. What has changed? What does the Australian written word reflect - check page 23 of The Standard as amended December 200 for that information was heavily involved with the drawing / art work of the Australian Standard and the intent all the way through was to keep that beautiful balance - sure the Pictorial could have differed and further modifications made, but it appears to have set a trend for the WBO and the UK as parts of the bird now appear to have been adopted by them, thanks to Roy Aplin that wonderful wildlife artist and Budgerigar Fancier from the United KDgdom for his final imprint on same. There are magnificently balanced budgerigars around today, world-wide, thus symmetry can be retained with increased size. t is what am seeing and feeling if you like that is happening in parts of Australia in not so recent times and continues that gives me fear about the direction we are going. f cop criticism that does not concern me, the initial quote will stand by. judged birds that, as was informed later, were winners at previous shows, mean best of Statns and or Show and Section winners that should not have ever been placed. Harsh words but true. The fortunate part was that the exhibitors as one were able to see what was referring to as asked them to view these sometimes big headed but ugly shaped birds or sometimes fine with lumpy necks or widened pelvic areas that caused hips and therefore wings to elevate. They were able to see where their direction had deviated. did not do this to humiliate the fanciers', did not do it for any other reason but to show that we need to revisit our direction. hope that the message was taken in the spirit it was intended. Do not get me wrong, there were birds at these shows that were wonderful and in particular the last show the winner was world class. Other issues that are presenting on the bench are long flights, long secondaries, missing flights, hinged tails, lumps in necks, lack of width between the eyes to name some. f we do not correct we accept and that will potentially diminish the hobby further because we were too blase. The wrong birds will have infiltrated too deeply for correction and do not want to be party to that. We need to make a stand and retain the beauty that we should all so seriously desire. Maybe we need to replicate the mindset of Dr Armour? Nigel Tonkin Feb 20
