2 Executive Summary African Penguin (Spheniscus demersus) The African Penguin SSP population at the time of analyses consists of 935 ( ) individuals at 50 AZA institutions. A target size of 1100 individuals was designated for this population by the Penguin Taxon Advisory Group (TAG) in their Regional Collection Plan (RCP). Under AZA s current sustainability designations, this population qualifies as a Green SSP. The genetic statistics reported in this plan are based on an analytical studbook and reflect the exclusion of 167 recently identified potential s that would have otherwise been included as potential breeders. The currently living 714 birds remaining in the potentially breeding population are descended from 94 founders with no additional potential founders remaining. Despite the exclusion of many extra birds in 2016, gene diversity in the population is still very high (98.62%) and equivalent to that found in about 36 unrelated individuals (FGE = 36.18). Furthermore, the temporary loss of these birds as potential breeders has not significantly impacted long term genetic projections, which indicate population gene diversity is at 97% in 100 years and above 95% for over 200 years. Gene diversity of 90% is a standard benchmark for AZA managed populations, and below this level of gene diversity it is expected that reproduction will be increasingly compromised by, among other factors, lower hatch weights, smaller clutch sizes, and greater hatchling mortality. In order to reach the TAG recommended target size of 1100 in three years (λ=1.053), approximately 126 to 152 hatches are needed. Only approximately 68 hatches are needed to maintain current population size (λ=1.00). With an average of 76.4 hatches recorded in the SSP over the past five years, this population is expected to grow but at a slower rate than is needed to fill SSP spaces by With an additional 77 viable females excluded from breeding this year due to potential ization, SSP institutions will need to increase breeding efforts with the remaining recommended females in order to meet demographic needs. As with most SSP populations, recommended pairings are prioritized to maintain or increase gene diversity through considerations of mean kinship, avoidance of inbreeding, differences in sire and dam mean kinships, and the degree of uncertainty within a pedigree. Every effort was made to keep genetically valuable pairs together and at their current institutions. Additionally, the SSP considered the hypothetical genetic value of potential s and avoided breaking up pairs or moving birds based on their potential status alone. Summary Actions: The SSP recommends 174 breeding females, with 79 of these encouraged to double-clutch. MateRx matrices have been provided for several large colonies to help managers in identifying valuable pairs and regulating reproduction. Approximately 65 transfers have been recommended in order to establish new colonies, create new pairs, and meet institutional needs. Any and all future transactions not listed in these current recommendations must be preapproved by the SSP Steering Committee, including the transfer of offspring produced as a recommendation of the current plan. 1

6 Description of Population Status African Penguin (Spheniscus demersus) SSP Introduction: The African Penguin SSP population at the time of analyses consists of 935 ( ) individuals at 50 AZA institutions. A target size of 1100 individuals was designated for this population by the Penguin Taxon Advisory Group (TAG) in their Regional Collection Plan (RCP). Under AZA s current sustainability designations, this population qualifies as a Green SSP. The African Penguin Species Survival Plan (SSP) was initiated in 1996, and breeding and transfer recommendations have been produced every two years since However, the recommendations presented in this current plan will be reevaluated in a single year s time following molecular investigation into potential ization in the SSP. Comprehensive genetic and demographic analyses of the North American Regional African Penguin Studbook (current to 1 April 2016) were performed in July 2016 using PopLink 2.4 and PMx Version Recommendations contained in this Breeding and Transfer plan supersede those made by earlier plans. Status and Conservation: IUCN (2012): Endangered; CITES: Appendix II; USFWS: Endangered Analytical Population: This population currently has an 87.9% known ancestral pedigree. An analytical overlay was created to address unknowns in the pedigree, based on initial assumptions previously developed by Bob Lacy and additional assumptions created at previous SSP meetings (Appendix A). Fifty-four ( ) birds were excluded from the genetic analyses due to reasons including age, participation in education programs, medical concerns, behavioral issues, and unresolved pedigree (Appendix C). Additionally, 167 ( ) individuals that would have otherwise been included are excluded as potential breeders this year until molecular analysis can confirm species purity. For more information on management of potential s in the SSP, please see page 7. Following these pedigree assumptions and exclusions, the potentially breeding population consists of 714 ( ) individuals with a 100% known pedigree. Demography: The African Penguin SSP population exhibited rapid growth from the early 1970s to the late 1980s due to successful breeding by zoos and aquariums (Figure 1). Growth rates during this time ranged from lambda (λ) of 0.90 to Starting in the 1990s and coinciding with SSP management, annual growth rates due to zoo and aquarium hatches were more modest but with a general trend of positive growth (mean λ over past 26 years = 1.033). In the last five years, the population has grown on average by about 3% (λ = 1.034). In order to reach the TAG recommended target size of 1100 in three years (λ=1.053), approximately 126 to 152 hatches are needed. Only approximately 68 hatches are needed to maintain current population size (λ=1.00). With an average of 76.4 hatches recorded in the SSP over the past five years, this population is expected to grow but at a slower rate than is needed to fill SSP spaces by With an additional 77 viable females excluded from breeding this year due to potential ization, SSP institutions will need to increase breeding efforts with the remaining breeding females in order to meet demographic needs. Figure 1. Census of the African Penguin SSP population from 1960 to present by sex (left) and origin (right). 5

7 Figure 2. Age distribution of the total African Penguin SSP population before exclusions (left; N = 935 ( )) and the potentially breeding population after 221 exclusions (right; N = 714 ( )). Note the scale difference on the x axis. Age distribution The age structure of the total African Penguin SSP population appears fairly stable, with no empty age classes and a large base of juveniles to support future reproduction and demographic stability (Fig. 2, left). Even after the exclusion of 221 birds, 23% of the total population, the potentially breeding population still approximates a stable distribution with many breeding males and females (Fig. 2, right). In both cases, a male sex bias is evident, which could potentially disrupt breeding in this monogamously breeding species; however, unpaired males can be managed in single sexed colonies when necessary. Due to the large size of this population and the specie s long reproductive lifespan, this is not a major concern currently but should continue to be monitored in the future. Longevity According to studbook data in AZA between 1970 to present, if an African penguin in AZA survives past the first year of life, median life expectancy is 18.6 years for males and 15.3 years for females (Appendix F). This indicates that about half of animals hatched in AZA that survive past the first year of life are expected to die before these ages and about half after. Although the studbook also contains records of African Penguins living upwards of 41 years old for both sexes, median life expectancy is a more appropriate way to communicate the typical lifespan of this species in AZA zoos. The studbook also contains a record for a wild hatched male living to 45 years (with a +/- year estimate); however, because hatch dates and ages at entry into zoos are unknown and difficult to verify, 41 years should be viewed as a more reliable maximum longevity until more data accumulate. First year mortality observed for this species is approximately 32% for males and 31% for females (Appendix D). As with most egg laying species, only eggs which hatch and are recorded in the studbook are reflected in these mortality rates. Reproduction Reproduction has been recorded as early as 1.5 years for both sexes, though first reproduction at around two years is more typical. Peak female reproductive range, based on studbook data in AZA from 1970 to present, occurs between four and 15 years, though a decline in fecundity is noticed after eight years. Nonetheless, females have reproduced at as old as 32 years. Males have a longer reproductive span, with the oldest sire recorded at 35 years and fairly consistent fecundity rates observed between four and 28 years. However, decline in fecundity is evident after age class 14. Reproduction has been recorded year round. Clutch size ranges from one to two (mean = 1.4) following an approximately 38 day incubation period. Multiple clutches in a single season are possible and will be needed to meet demographic needs this year. 6

8 Genetics: These genetic statistics are based on an analytical studbook with pedigree assumptions intended to estimate relatedness. They also reflect the exclusion in 2016 of 167 recently identified potential s that would have otherwise been included as potential breeders. These animals will remain excluded until species purity can be verified through molecular genetic analysis. Consequently, population statistics reported in this plan may not be comparable to previous years and could change again in the future. Gene diversity of 90% is a standard benchmark for AZA managed Figure 3. Strategies to maintain gene diversity include equalization of founder representation (Fig. 3) by breeding animals with low and well matched mean kinships and through maintenance of the already high effective size ratio (proportion of population breeding). At this time, the importation of new founders is not necessary to meet genetic goals. 9 Management of ization: Molecular genetic testing recently confirmed an African x Humboldt penguin in the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP). The original ization event is suspected to have occurred before 1982 in STUTTGART, which held African and Humboldt penguins in the same enclosure until Consequently, any individual with STUTTGART ancestry is considered to have a high ization risk. In order to identify other potential ization events, the EEP is investigating historic mixed colonies of African and Humboldt Penguins through comparative analysis of their respective EEP studbooks (Bos, Schad, & Fienieg, 2016). Through this comparative analysis, the EEP identified 20 individuals exported to the SSP that have ancestry tracing back to mixed exhibits in the EEP. The SSP imported these individuals during two events, the first in 1984 from AMSTERDAM to BALTIMORE and the second in 2006 from LISBON to GA AQUARIUM. Of these 20 imports, 14 have currently living descendants in the SSP. Ten of the living descendants are permanent non-breeders, which means that 167 birds that would otherwise have been included as potential breeders are excluded this year. These constitutes approximately 18% of the total SSP population (167/935; Fig. 4). However, due to its large size, the SSP population can afford to exclude reproductively viable potential s as breeders in the short term until molecular analyses can confirm species purity. It should be noted that the fact that these birds trace back to mixed Figure 4. This graph illustrates the proportion of the total SSP population (N=935) that is (a) excluded as permanent non-breeders, (b) reproductively viable but temporarily excluded as breeders due to potential status (18%), and (c) currently included as potential breeders (76%). African and Humboldt penguin exhibits in Europe only indicates potential of ization not confirmation. The SSP is currently working to identify the most feasible and cost effective way to collect blood samples for analysis. Any potential confirmed to be purebred will be added back into the potentially breeding population in the future. In these current recommendations, the SSP considered the hypothetical genetic value of potential s and avoided breaking up pairs or moving birds based on their potential status alone. Management Strategy: In order to reach the TAG recommended target size of 1100 in three years (λ=1.053), approximately 126 to 152 hatches are needed. In order to meet demographic goals, some demographic pairs, consisting of individuals with higher than average mean kinships and/or low levels of relatedness, have been recommended. The SSP made every attempt to avoid breeding between genetically mismatched individuals, which would only flood the population with common alleles, permanently link rare and common lineages, and make pairing recommendations increasingly difficult in the future. The studbook keeper will request an update from all breeding facilities in approximately one year, and the management group will closely monitor the breeding success and make adjustments if necessary. Revised recommendations may be distributed in 2017 if the SSP is able to resolve questionable species purity by that time. 8

10 1. The SSP recommends 174 breeding females among 37 institutions. a. These breeding recommendations apply to the upcoming year and may be revised again by the end of 2017 if questions concerning the potential issue have been resolved by this time. For more information on how the SSP is managing potential s in the population, please refer to page 8. b. Approximately 79 recommended breeding pairs may double clutch in the upcoming year. c. Six institutions with large colonies have been provided with MateRx matrices in order to help them to work with the SSP Coordinator in identifying genetically valuable pairs and regulating reproduction. For more information on using MateRx, see page 10. Any breeding pairs with MSI scores of 1, 2, or 3 are recommended to double clutch. However, contact the SSP Coordinators first for approval to breed any potential pairs using the MateRx matrix. 2. The SSP recommends 65 transfers in order to create new breeding pairs and to meet institutional needs. An additional five animals are available currently for placement. 3. Attempts were made to address existing pairs with specific recommendations. The SSP considered the hypothetical genetic value of potential s and avoided breaking up pairs or moving birds based on their potential status alone. Institutions should consult with the SSP Coordinators with questions about pairs or re-pairings not addressed in this plan. 4. Recommendations for breeding birds must await determination of sex. Jean Dubach at Loyola Medical Center is willing to use DNA probes to determine the sex of any African penguin, at a low cost to the SSP zoos. A submission form with detailed instructions for this test is attached (Appendix I). 5. The SSP wants to remind all institutions to check the ownership of any birds that are recommended to transfer. It is the responsibility of the holding institution to inform the owner about the transfer. 6. The SSP considers all individuals, of all participating institutions, to be a part of the SSP population. Therefore, unless recommended by the current Breeding and Transfer Plan, any and all transactions must be pre-approved by the SSP Steering Committee, including the transfer of offspring produced as a recommendation of the current plan. Individuals that are not recommended for breeding should not be bred, and no offspring are to be produced outside of these breeding recommendations. Consult the SSP Coordinators if you have any questions on this matter. 7. Institutions interested in creating a new penguin enclosure or expanding their current one are encouraged to explore the possibility of holding Humboldt penguins rather than African penguins. If you are interested, contact the Humboldt penguin SSP Coordinator, Alex Waier, at Alexander.Waier@milwaukeecountywi.gov. 9

11 Explanation of Recommendations Using MateRx MateR x is analytical software developed jointly by the National Zoological Park and Lincoln Park Zoo. The primary output is a matrix of genetic ratings (Mate Suitability Indices = MSI) for every possible breeding pair in a population. MSIs allow managers to quickly discover how the genetic status of animals in their collections and compare to the rest of a managed population. Each MSI represents the genetic consequences for the population if a given pair was to produce offspring. There are seven values for MSIs: offspring of pairs rated 1, 2, or 3 would benefit the population s genetic situation; pairs rated 4, 5, or 6 would be detrimental to the population s genetic situation. Pairs without an MSI value (i.e., a dash [--]) should not be considered under any circumstances without consulting a PMC, PMC Adjunct, or SPMAG advisor. These MSI values are defined as: 1 very beneficial genetically (recommended to double clutch) 2 moderately beneficial (recommended to double clutch) 3 slightly beneficial (recommended to double clutch) 4 neutral 5 moderately detrimental 6 very detrimental genetically MateR x integrates four genetic factors to produce the Mate Suitability Index (MSI). These four components are used by PMC, PMC Adjunct, or SPMAG advisors to develop breeding recommendations. In decreasing order of importance, the components used to rate pairings are: 1. the expected change in genetic diversity (increase, decrease) that would result if an offspring of a pair is added to the population; 2. the relative rareness or commonness of the parents genetic information (i.e., the difference between the male and female mean kinships); 3. the inbreeding coefficient of offspring that would be produced by a pair; and 4. the proportion, if any, of the dam and/or sire s pedigree that is of unknown origin. 10

83 Analytical Data for True Individuals Appendix A Analytical Assumptions Studbook ID Field True Studbook Analytical Overlay Notes Dam UNK 48 Sire UNK 45 Detroit imported 7 wild-caught birds in Parents for hatches from (and a few subsequently) were not recorded. Wild caught Dam UNK 48 birds and some progeny were later sent to Los Angeles, and Sire Dam UNK UNK descendants were disbursed from there. Because the Detroit birds represent valuable unique lineages, it was decided to arbitrarily assign Sire UNK 43 the birds coming from Detroit a progeny of two pairs of the original wild-caught birds. Those arbitrary assignments were: Progeny Dam UNK 44 assigned to 45 x 48: 152, 188; Progeny assigned to 43 x 44: 99, 222. Sire UNK 43 Dam UNK STEIN2 MarineLand of the Pacific (now defunct) sent four birds (526, 580, 603, Sire UNK STEIN1 633) to Steinhart that became ancestors of many birds in the current population. The MarineLand population contained several Spheniscus Dam UNK STEIN2 species and it is possible that some of the birds identified as African Sire UNK STEIN1 penguins may have been s. Descendants of these birds were not Dam UNK STEIN2 used in prior breeding plans. However, genetic testing has recently indicated that the four birds are pure African penguins. It is not known Sire UNK STEIN1 that the relationships were among the birds that came from MarineLand of the Pacific, but it is likely that they were unrelated to Dam UNK STEIN2 penguins in other colonies. For the analyses, we made the assumption that the four birds were full siblings, with hypothetical wild-caught parents (STEIN1 x STEIN2). This assumption has now allowed many Sire UNK STEIN1 birds to be used in the breeding program that had been excluded in prior years. Five birds of unknown parentage (204, 205, 279, 280, and 281) first arrived in zoos in the 1970s at MICH KEN (Ken Chisholm, Montreal). Dam UNK MIKE2 Although the parents are unknown, it is most likely that they were founders (either wild caught or from Europe); however, it is possible that these 5 birds in the studbook are related in some way. For the purposes of the analyses, the birds from MICH KEN were treated as Sire UNK MIKE1 though they were full siblings produced by the mating of two hypothetical wild-caught founders (MIKE1 x MIKE2). However, all of these birds except #280, are now dead with no living descendants. Georgia Aquarium obtained penguins from Amsterdam in Baltimore (in 1992), Denver (in 1982), and Toronto (in 1972) had previously obtained some birds from Amsterdam. This Amsterdam population was started from 11 wild-caught founders and was maintained as a closed population for 23 years. The population had gone through several bottlenecks during disease outbreaks prior to shipment of birds to North America. No pedigrees of the birds imported from Amsterdam are available, and it is likely that they were related. In past SSP analyses, the birds imported from Amsterdam were treated as full siblings produced by the mating of two hypothetical wild caught founders. However, due to the recent import of more birds from AMSTERDAM, a black hole equation was used to determine the estimated relatedness of the living descendants in this population. This method indicates that the 23 animals that have been exported from AMSTERDAM are equivalent to first cousins. 100 REPORT OVERVIEW: Appendix F Descriptive Survival Statistics Report AFRICAN PENGUIN Studbook SPHENISCUS DEMERSUS North American Regional Studbook Studbook data current as of 4/1/2016 Compiled by Seana Flossic sflossic@tulsazoo.org PopLink Studbook filename: AfricanPenguin_6july2016_13Jul16 PopLink User Who Exported Report: ssullivan Date of Export: 8/9/2016 Data Filtered by: Association = AZA.FED AND StartDate = 1/1/1970 AND EndDate = 8/9/2016 PopLink Version: 2.4 Based on this analysis, if an AFRICAN PENGUIN survives to its first birthday, its median life expectancy is 18.6 years for males and 15.3 years for females. Please see the body of the report for more details. BACKGROUND ON ANALYSES: These analyses were conducted using animals that lived during the period 1 January 1970 to 9 August 2016 at institutions within AZA. The analyses mainly focus on survival statistics from 1 year (e.g. excluding any individuals that did not survive past their first birthday). These statistics most accurately reflect typical survival for animals which can be seen on exhibit in zoos and aquariums. This report summarizes survival records of individuals housed at zoological facilities for a specific geographic range and time period; these records trace an individual's history from birth or entry into the population to death, exit out of the population, or the end of the time period. As such, this history only reflects standard practices - including management, husbandry, and acquisition/disposition practices - for the specified time period and geographic range. Thus, the report contents should be viewed with some caution as they may not fully reflect current and newly emerging zoo and aquarium management techniques or practices. For example, if the population has not been maintained in zoos and aquariums long enough to have many adults living into old age, median life expectancy will likely be an underestimate until more data accrue in older age classes. Thus, users of these reports should recognize that the results produced will likely vary over time or depending on the subset of data selected. For many species, including humans, survival statistics often differ for males and females. For this population, male and female data were robust enough to detect statistical differences 1 in survival statistics. These results therefore include separate statistics for males and females; individuals whose sex is unknown are proportionally included in calculations. SUMMARY OF ANALYSES: SURVIVAL STATISTICS Female # of individuals with partial or full lifespans used in analysis # of individuals which had died by 9 August 2016 (analysis end date) % of individuals which had died by 9 August % 37.7% median life expectancy assuming an individual survives to its first birthday (years) % confidence interval for median (years) 14.5 to to 20.0 only 25% of animals live beyond this age (years) First-year (infant) survival 74.3% 63.8% maximum longevity (years) See footnotes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 for definitions of terminology used in this table. Male 99

101 The median life expectancy 2 for AFRICAN PENGUIN was statistically different between males and females, with males having a significantly higher median life expectancy. Given the quality of the data - how many animals are in the database and how many have died - there is a 95% chance that the true median for each sex falls within the 95% confidence intervals displayed in the table. The table also lists the ages which only 25% of AFRICAN PENGUIN can be expected to survive past and the first-year (infant) survival 3 rates. The year after birth/hatching is a period of relatively low survival for many species and life histories. The maximum longevity 4 observed for AFRICAN PENGUIN females is based on an individual which was DEAD as of the analysis end date (studbook number 188, sex = Female, origin = Captive Hatch, birth date estimate = +/- 1 Year). The maximum longevity observed for AFRICAN PENGUIN males is based on an individual which was DEAD as of the analysis end date (studbook number 70, sex = Male, origin = Wild Hatch, birth date estimate = +/- 1 Year). 5 The correct interpretation of these statistics is that, if it survives the first year of life, the 'typical' male AFRICAN PENGUIN will live 18.6 years and the typical female will live 15.3 years; that half of all AFRICAN PENGUIN can be expected to die before they reach the male and female median life expectancies and half will live longer than that; that only 25% of all male AFRICAN PENGUIN can be expected to live to 28.4 years and females to 27.2 years; and that it is rare but possible for male AFRICAN PENGUIN to live 45.7 years and female AFRICAN PENGUIN to live 41.1 years. The median life expectancy, confidence interval, first-year survival, and maximum longevity may change as more data are accumulated, the population's age structure changes, or management practices improve. While both median life expectancy and maximum longevity are discussed in this report, it is more appropriate to rely on median life expectancy to place the age of any one individual in context. To put these statistics in perspective, median life expectancy from age one for people in the United States is 77.5 years and the maximum longevity (documented worldwide) is 122 years 6. Therefore, if a person lived to be 85 years old, the appropriate context is that they lived well beyond the median life expectancy (77.5), not that they fell short of the maximum longevity (122). DATA QUALITY The PopLink Survival Tool uses five data quality measures to determine whether data are robust enough to make reliable estimates of key survival parameters. The subsets of male and female data for this population passed all of the following data quality tests: 1. Can the median life expectancy be calculated? PASS 2. Is the sample size (number of individuals at risk) greater than 20 individuals at the median? PASS 3. Is the 95% Confidence Interval (CI) bounded? PASS 4. Is the sample size in the first age class of analysis (e.g. the first day of analysis) greater than 30 individuals? PASS 5. Is the length of the 95% CI < 33% of the maximum longevity? PASS 1 Statistical significance was determined by comparing 84% confidence intervals around median life expectancy for males and females, with 311 unknown sex individuals proportionally incorporated into the analysis. For this population, non-overlapping confidence intervals indicated that male and female medians were significantly different. See the PopLink manual for more details. 2 The statistics analyzed for this report (median life expectancy, 95% confidence limits, and age to which 25% of individuals survive) exclude any individuals who did not survive to their first birthday; these individuals are excluded because this Report is focused on providing median survival estimates for the typical individual that survives the vulnerable infant stage. In other words, this report answers the question, 'how long is this species expected to live once it has reached its first birthday?' For this studbook, 878 individuals died before their first birthday and were excluded from these analyses. For all animals that survive to their first birthday, 50% will die before the median life expectancy in this report and 50% die after. Note that the median life expectancy obtained from population management software (PM2000, PMx, ZooRisk) or from life tables in Breeding and Transfer Plans (e.g. where Lx = 0.5) will be lower because it includes these individuals that did not survive to their first birthday in order to project the correct number of births needed. See the PopLink manual for more details. 3 For reference, first-year survival is provided. For this studbook and the selected demographic window, 878 individuals did not survive to their first birthday and were excluded from the estimates provided above (median life expectancy, 95% confidence limits, and age to which 25% of individuals survive). 4 Maximum longevity is the age of the oldest known individual for this species, living or dead. It is not necessarily the biological maximum age, but only reflects the individuals included in the dataset. 5 Censored individuals are individuals whose deaths have not been observed as of the end of the analysis window, including individuals who 1) are still alive as of the end date, 2) exited the geographic window before the end date (through transfer or release), or 3) were lost-to-follow up before the end date. 6 Median life expectancy for people is estimated from: Xu, Jiaquan, Kochanek KD, Murphy SL, and Tejada-Vera B Deaths: Final Data for National vital statistics reports; vol 58 no 19. Hyattsville, MD: National Center for Health Statistics. Jeanne Calment of France was the oldest documented and fully validated human and died at 122 years and 164 days; from: Accessed August 9,

GD is predicted to be maintained at 99.5% ± 0.05% in 100 years with low inbreeding levels ( ± 0.002) Status: Low Risk in zoos & aquariums in 100 years For additional details, see page 7 in the main report Projected Status Potential Changes The population could fulfill institutional interest if the breeding rate is increased to ~68 hatches/year with imports and exports High gene diversity (GD: 99.7% ± 0.02%) and low inbreeding (F: ± 0.001) would be maintained Status: Low Risk in zoos & aquariums in 100 years For additional details, see pages 8-9 in the main report Essential Management Actions How Institutions Can Help Increase breeding to produce ~68 hatches/year to avoid decline and fulfill institutional interest Pursue breeding recommendations given to your institution Report breeding challenges and successes to the Program Leader 104

106 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Population Viability Analyses (PVA) are being conducted by Lincoln Park Zoo and Population Management Center researchers through funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The project team uses ZooRisk 3.80 (Earnhardt et al. 2008), a PVA modeling software, to examine what would happen to AZA populations if current conditions remain the same (the baseline scenario), and then assess the impact of changes in reproductive rates, space availability, imports/exports, and other potential management actions (alternate scenarios). Model scenarios for this population were developed with members of the Association of Zoos and Aquarium (AZA) Penguin Taxonomic Advisory Group (TAG) during winter of POPULATION HISTORY/CURRENT STATUS African penguins (Spheniscus demersus) have been consistently held in AZA institutions since Since that time, the African penguin population has grown through a combination of zoo hatches and importations of animals from outside of AZA, reaching a peak of 857 individuals in Currently, the population has 835 animals housed at 48 institutions. In the past 10 years, annual hatch rates have fluctuated quite dramatically. The population has averaged ~55 hatches/year over the past decade and ~66 hatches/year over the past five years in particular. Over the last 10 years, the AZA African penguin population has experienced an average of 13.6 imports and 8.7 exports per year. The population currently has high gene diversity (98.8%) and low inbreeding (average inbreeding coefficient of ). PVA RESULTS Model results indicate that if the current breeding rate (~55 hatches/year in the past 10 years) continues, the AZA African penguin population will decline over the next 100 years, regardless of whether it is open to future imports and exports. However, increasing the breeding rate will allow the population to remain stable or fill potential spaces (1100) over the next 100 years. If imports and exports continue in the future, the population needs to produce 60 hatches per year to remain at its current size or 68 per year to fill space. However, if the population is closed to future imports and exports, it will need to produce 67 hatches per year to remain at its current size or 76 per year to fill space. Increased breeding rates (with or without imports and exports) will also maintain the population s genetic health over the next century. MANAGEMENT ACTIONS The AZA African Penguin Animal Program should consider the follow changes to current management strategies: Increase breeding rates: If the population remains open to imports and exports, breeding should be increased from 55 to a minimum of 60 hatches each year to maintain the population at its current size or 68 hatches per year to fill spaces. If the population is closed to imports and exports, breeding needs to increase further (67 hatches/year to stabilize or 76 hatches/year to fill spaces). If elevated breeding rates can be maintained, the population may become demographically stable and maintain its genetic health. Please see the 2014 African Penguin AZA Animal Program full PVA report on the AZA website for further details. Contact Brent Johnson at bjohnson@lpzoo.org with questions 105
