2 Welcome to the fully formed adventures of Halfway There Kids! Earn points and help speed Iggy and Sue s rescue Hi kids, I m Eke the Beach Mouse asking you to help get our sweet turtle hatchlings to safe, clean waters faster. Earn points by doing activities in this book. Keep track and add them up (an adult can help). Here s a true adventure and you can take part to give thousands of hatchlings a whole new start. Jump in dear readers and see what you can do to save two little hatchlings that don t have a clue. If you collect 100 points, you can cut Iggy and Sue s trip in half by using the FedEx Secret Shortcut to safe hatching grounds. 3 It s a hunt for buried treasure Iggy and Sue lie deep in the sand, getting ready to hatch, but they need a hand. It s a treasure hunt on beaches along the Gulf Coast, but people aren t searching for gold, kids they re looking for white, sea turtle eggs. This year, because of oil in the water, it isn t safe for newbornturtles like Iggy and Sue to go swimming after they hatch. They need a new home on a safer shore, but first they must be found what are we waiting for? To help, biologists and other people who care are hunting for nests of eggs laid by mama Loggerheads and other kinds of turtles. It s never a good idea to disturb a turtle nest, but this is a special year when little turtles need a helping hand. Get 15 points for a colorful drawing Color the things you see in this scene. 4 We need to help Iggy, Sue and their turtle friends, too Here are three types of turtles we ve put on the spot. You can see who they are once you ve connected the dots. 5 Finding the nest is the first part of the test Biologists look for signs on the beach Which sign is correct: A, B, or C? but that only gets us halfway home Solve this a-mazing challenge to find Iggy and Sue s nest Give yourself 15 points for each right answer on this page A B C Biologists also look for a mound on the ground, which tells them (pick one): A. Kids built a sandcastle here. Don t mess with it. B. Eggs were laid here and covered up Hooray, you found Iggy and Sue s nest! But finding them was the easy part. Removing the eggs and getting them to the beautiful beaches of Cape Canaveral, Florida where they can hatch safely is the other half of our journey. The trip is long and takes special care, people and equipment. Sometimes a tough trip can be made easier. Let s see how. 6 The next step after the eggs have been found is digging them up from the ground very carefully! Step three is no breeze, you must carry them gently, so Iggy and Sue aren t hurt accidentally. Is it moving day? Add 10 points for coloring But I haven t packed yet! A correct answer earns 10 points Turtle eggs take around 60 days to hatch so biologists are digging them up around 10 days before they hatch. They are removed gently by hand and placed in a special cooler. Know what s cooler than that? People are rescuing eggs from up to 350 nests along the coast to try to save 25,000 hatchlings! (That s a lot) There are 29 sea turtle eggs in this picture, but four of the eggs just hatched. 7 Here are Iggy and Sue happily tucked away on their special moving day Early hatchers get special treatment too! Eggs are placed one-by-one in containers with moist sand from the nest on the bottom. When the bottom layer is full, an inch of sand is laid on top of the eggs, then another layer of eggs is added. Only 60 eggs are placed in the container. Kids, unscramble the letters, and when you learn what Sue is saying, give yourself 10 points. Will I need a swimming lesson, Sue? No, Iggy, swimming is easy for us Which turtle is different? 8 Step 4 is a major part of the plan when Iggy and Sue get to ride in this van Called a FedEx Sprinter Van, it s a van that can do all kinds of things Like keep things warm or cold because it s temperature controlled. It s also keen because it s green, which saves on fuel and that s better for our planet. This van can also keep the ride smooth and comfy. Iggy can tell you that! 9 Step Five A Super-Cool Drive Aboard a Big FedEx Trailer This huge truck from FedEx has been specially designed with Iggy and Sue s complete comfort in mind. Iggy can snooze on this comfortable cruise The smaller van meets up with this big FedEx truck that travels to four main locations to pick up eggs. With Iggy, Sue and other pals on board, the big rig then heads off to the hatchery in Cape Canaveral 500 miles away! Earn 10 points for cool coloring 16 Points for this page Total points so far 17

12 Step 6 Arrival at Cape Canaveral, where rockets and turtles are launched Our turtles arrive with just days til their birth and are cared for by people who value their worth. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1... LIFT OFF! Keep coloring! In a warehouse, the temperature is kept warm and steady until Iggy and Sue are ready...and now they are! At Cape Canaveral, all the eggs are kept in their containers in a warehouse where it s 85 degrees inside, dark and quiet. For Iggy and Sue who have been here 6 days, the countdown to launch is on! Clean, clear water! What a wonderful birthday present! Last one in is a rotten egg! Isn t it fabulous, our turtle pals are free to run and roam and romp in clean waters. Hopefully, Sue will return to her original beach in 20 years or so to lay her own eggs. No one knows for sure, but we can hope and help. Sue knows clean water like this is a gift and we ve all got to work in the present to make sure it s there in the future

13 A long journey lies ahead for Iggy, Sue and all of us, too For all of us, there s a journey to make sure turtles survive and the water and air on our planet can keep life going and growing.
