6 6 Seeds v s Pellets as Part of Your Pet Parrot's Diet By Bree Bisshop Parrots in the wild eat many plants, tubers, fruits, grains, nuts, flowers, seed and insects. Wild parrots fly kilometres daily searching for food and need a high-energy diet. Most parrots don t eat much seed in the wild, and generally not the types of seeds you find in commercial parrot mix. They eat a wide variety of foods that you can t hope to duplicate unless you start going out with a collector s licence to the bush or importing them from South America. Our companion parrots will tend to be clipped and can become overweight with associated health problems if fed the same high-fat diet that the wild birds can eat. Captive parrots can be prone to obesity and Fatty Liver Disease. Research has determined that a pet parrot s diet should be ideally about 12 15% fat. Most seed mixes are much higher in fat, and it gets worse by the time they have picked out and eaten their high-fat favourites, the sunflower and safflower seeds, which are also quite high in sugar. Most seed diets are deficient in vitamins, minerals and amino acids. In the wild parrots compensate for deficiencies by eating other things. In captivity, they are dependent on what we give them, and if that s only seed they have no way to make up for what the seeds lack. In particular, an all-seed diet lacks calcium, which is very important to parrots for maintaining their delicate bones. There are some great calcium supplements on the market, my favourite being Vetafarm s D Nutrical which is a powder that you mix through your seed mix. Seeds also are lacking in complete proteins, which birds need in order to replace and grow feathers. Parrots on a varied diet of vegetables, fruits, grains, and a small amount of pellets and seed live longer, are healthier, have better colour and feather condition, and are more active and playful than their seed only eating counterparts. Parrots have taste buds and in some ways are like children they will eat the most of what they like the best, which generally isn t going to be what s good for them. Although a highquality,(non supermarket) supplemented seed mix can actually be a fairly wellbalanced diet if eaten in its entirety, it won t be after picking out the parts it likes the best and dumping the rest on the floor. This is why we recommend not to fill your food bowl to the top. Only provide a small amount more than the bird will eat each day and if you see your bird choosing only one or two seeds and not touching the rest, remove those seeds from the mix. The easiest way to provide a seed mix and know it is going to be a balanced food is to buy a seed mix formulated by experts such as Birdzone seed blends, containing dried vegies and fruit and seeds not usually found in most seed mixes.

7 7 Another great way to increase the nutrition of your seed is to sprout it. Sprouting seeds removes much of its fat content and increases the protein content and other nutrients. We will go more in depth with this in our next blog. Ideally, your parrot s diet should consist of a pellet or good fortified seed blend base (50 70% pellets/seed blend in equal values), vegetables, grains, legumes, sprouted seed, fruits and other healthy table foods (30 50%). The greater the variety of foods you offer your parrot, the more likely it is that it will be able to meet its nutritional needs. A seed diet is not so bad for the birds like canaries and budgies, who eat a large amount of grass seeds in the wild and whose seed mix consists mostly of a good seed like millet. Seeds are a high-energy, natural food source that is good nutrition as part of a balanced diet. Seeds are not all bad; they are just incomplete, and often high in fat. When used in combination with other things they are be a useful addition to the parrot s diet. The small seeds, such as millet and canary grass seed are high in carbohydrates, low in fat, and a good energy source. There are a few downfalls to consider with pellets as well. Firstly it is a fortified food, so it is easy to overdose your birds on some vitamins if you are using a nutritional supplement at the same time. There is also the matter of the pellets being formulated as a sweeping generalisation of all bird species rather than something like Birdzone being formulated to the needs of the species. The other issue is that sometimes birds will get used to the one pellet and if there comes a time where your brand of pellets is out, the bird may refuse to eat. You can combat all these problems by providing your bird with a mix of brands of pellet and a quality seed mix as part of a varied diet. Not all pellet mixes are created equal; I recommend either a Roudybush pellet or a Vetafarm pellet. Choosing what pellet you should feed is based on the species. The only species of parrot where we do not recommend feeding a large portion of pellets is the Eclectus Parrot. The Eclectus Parrot has a longer digestive tract which makes it easy for them to overdose on vitamins such as vitamin A. Eclectus also need a much larger amount of fibre in their diet so fresh vegetables and fruit should make up 60% of their diet. In conclusion, the diet for your pet bird should really be catered to the species in question and formulated by a professional if you want to get the best out of your birds. Please contact us by phone, or come in-store if you wish to talk about your bird s diet! If you take nothing else from this article, just know that a seed only diet is not enough to sustain any type of bird for good health, this is especially important for birds that are moulting or breeding. 18 Dehydration in Birds 18 by Jen Davis Knowing the difference between a healthy bird and a dehydrated bird can save your pet's life. Dehydration can pose a definite risk to your bird, but if you know the symptoms to look for you may be able to prevent the dehydration from developing into a health crisis. Visible Symptoms: You can reduce the risk to your bird's health simply by taking a good look at him every day. If you are concerned about dehydration you must examine the area around your bird's eyes closely. If his eyes appear to be sunken or dull, or the skin surrounding his eyes has a wrinkled appearance your bird may be suffering from dehydration. Dehydration also can cause your bird's mucous membranes, located inside your bird's mouth, to become sticky or dried out. Lethargy and Weakness: A lack of energy often is one of the earliest signs that your bird may be experiencing some level of dehydration. A bird that is not consuming enough water is unlikely to maintain a normal, healthy energy level. If your bird stops chirping, singing, flying, or playing with his toys, or generally is not showing a normal level of interest in his environment, check to make sure he has an adequate water supply and is consuming enough water to maintain a normal level of hydration. Checking and changing your bird's water every day will help you get a good idea of what is normal for your particular pet. Elimination Habits: Adequate hydration is necessary for almost all physical functions, including elimination. If your bird is mildly dehydrated you may notice that his droppings are not as well formed or solid as they normally are. If your bird progresses from this point to become moderately-to-severely dehydrated he may produce very dry droppings or stop having bowel movements altogether. Owner Awareness: As a bird owner it is important for you to be aware of your individual bird's habits. You will have a much easier time identifying potential problems, such as mild dehydration, if you can spot abnormal behaviors or appearances before they progress. Pay attention to how much food and water your bird consumes regularly daily, how much physical waste he produces and what his normal behaviors are.

19 19 INTRODUCED BIRDS in BACKYARDS European Goldfinch Description: Introduced to Australia in the nineteenth century, the European Goldfinch is one of only two 'true finches' in Australia (the other is the Greenfinch ). It has a red face, with a black crown and shoulders. The sides of the head are white. The upper parts and flanks are brown, the abdomen and rump are white. The black wings have conspicuous yellow bars and a white trailing edge in flight. The tail is black, tipped with white. Females are similar to males but have a less red face. Juveniles have a brown head and streaked body plumage. Where does it live? Distribution: The European Goldfinch is a widespread species in Europe, central Asia and northern Africa and was introduced to Australia in the 1860s. Originally restricted to urban areas, the European Goldfinch has successfully moved out into country areas of south-eastern Australia, including Tasmania. Habitat: The European Goldfinch is found in settled areas, farmlands and weedy areas such as roadsides, railway lands and industrial wasteland. They are often seen in gardens and parks. Particularly associated with patches of Scotch Thistle. Seasonal Movements: Locally nomadic within range. What does it do? Feeding: The European Goldfinch has a finer bill than its relative, the Greenfinch, and eats smaller seeds, especially those of the introduced Scotch Thistle. They also eat insects in summer. Breeding: The European Goldfinch builds a cup-shaped nest in low bushes. Living with us: Can sometimes be a pest in orchards.
