1 CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE CYRTIDAE (DIPTERA,/ OF RUMANIA - MEDEEA WEINBERG The Cyrtid,a,e are a group of dipterous insects little known in Rumania. Among the oldest records of memb-ers of that familtl!1 t!!s_cotl$ry- iq t'\e list oastrobl (9) of 1896 and that of J. THALHAMMER (10) of No other records were known since then of the mentioned family. The Cyrtid,ae are flies of scarce occurrence having a characteristic aspect (fig. 1) and small size (3-9 mm). The adults are slow fliers but they_are able to glide due to the very fast vibration of their wings. They are silent fliers and do short regular incursions similarly as the spider hanging o1r ils thread. The Cyrtids are floricole Diptera and favour the sunny places. Their larvae are terrestrial and carnivorous. They grow as parasites in the abdomen or eggs of the Spiders. -Examined material: t4 specimens collected during the past 2t years, namely 3 specimens preserved in the Brukenthal Museum in Sibiu collected in the-period L952 *'; 3 specimens preserved in the collection of the "Dr. Gr. Antipa" Museum colleited in L952, and 8 specimens collected by N. SAVULESCU and C. NAGY to whom the best thanks are expressed here for their kindness. In the present paper 4 species are cited belonging in 2 genera, tgenus and 2 species of which are new for Rumania's fauna. For- those species previously recorded further localities are added. 1.. Oncodes gibbosus (L. L778) Geographical distribution: central and northern Europe. Recorded from Ocna Sibiului (9), (f0). Examined material 2 males and 1 female, 10. VIII.1952; one male and one female, X. L944, all from environs of Sibiu, collected by E. WORELL. Length: males 6-7 mm, females mm. In Rumania one male specimen was collected at Moldova Noua (Banat Region) by Dr. N. SAVULESCU, 28.VI This male specimen is yellowish white hairy. Head black, small, entirely covered by eyes (fig. 2). Thorax globular in shape, black shiny, covered with hairs similarly as the scutellum. Wing transparent, iridescent. Venation weak, yellowish white, only vein r brownish toward apex. Thoracic scale transparent with yellowish white bristles and brown edge (fig. 2). Halteres with light style and brown capitulum. Legs light yellow except for the coxae, trochantera and base of femora, which are black. Abdomen brown shiny with whitish bands across each tergite proximally. Sternite concolorous, only white bands are broader. Length of male: 5 mm. Species new for Rumanian fauna. 3. Oncodes zonatus Erichs L840 Geographical distribution: Europe. Recorded from Bragov (10). Examined material: 2 males and 4 females, Oradea, collected by C. NAGY, 2.VIII Length of males:6 mm; length of females:4-6 mm. 4. Paracrocera globula (Panz. 1802) (figs. 3, 4). Geographical distribution: central and southern Europe, North Africa.

Since our female specimens differ from the diagnosis of the male a brief description of the former is given below. Head small, nearly entirely covered by the glabrous, black shiny eyes (fig. ). Ocelli reddish. Antennae dark brown, situated near the ocelli, this character differentiating Paracrocera from the preceding genus (figs. 3 and 4). Both the thorax and the scutellum are covered by short yellowish olive hairs. Wing slightly infuscate, subcostal vein black, the remaining veins brown. Thoracic scale infuscate with brown-yellow edge; the halteres light in colour with capitulum light yellow in one specimen ahci orang coloured-in the other one. In the literature (6; 7) the wing and the thoracic scale are described as hyaline, and the edge of the latter as yellowish white (7). As those are the peculiarities of the described male I assume that there exists a sexual dimorphism as both our specimens are females which although collected from quite different years and localities, have the above mentioned characters. Legs yellow with fine yellowish bristles. Femora and tibiae darkened in the middle portion while the first tarsal joints are darkened throughout. In all the three pairs of legs the last tarsal joint and the claw black shiny. Abdomen provided with variable orange -yellow pattern and characteristic black spots. 2nd abdominal tergite with black basal band broadening laterally and extending in the middle as acute angulation. Black spots of the 3rd tergite only laterally, interrupted by black triangle in middle of intensely orange-yellow tergite. Following tergites are orange-yellow in colour with larger or smaller black triangular spot in the middle and

Ovipositor globular (fig. 3) I cerci large, pear-shaped with fine yellow bristles identical with those covering ovipositor. - Length of females: 5-6 mm.
