2 Foreword Due to unforseen circumstances Barry & Gwen need to relocate and with Barry not enjoying the best of health lately it has been decided to sell off his stock and race birds. Gwen will be keeping some of the birds that she has been racing in her name and Barry will attempt to continue racing in partnership with John Blokland, which he has been doing for the past few seasons. Barry has successfully bred and raced pigeons for over 50 years, winning many Club & Federation races with the Qld Racing Pigeon Fed and later with the Toowoomba Federation. He is most notably remembered for the famous ABC birds, which when crossed with the Balfe Harrisons and other lines brought a great deal of success to himself and many other flyers. Barry s passion has always been for the all day races finishing into the evening and the next morning. Space does not allow to detail the many many successful birds and races that have been flown from his loft. This success has continued right up to the present with Gwen winning the Thargomindah Fed 600 miles in 2009 clocking the bird at 4am on the second morning. Other recent notable successes have been 2 nd Fed Temora 580 miles and 3 rd Fed Jerilderie 650 miles, both sisters bred from the Grizzle family. Most of these winners can be traced back to what is known as the old Brisbane blood, consisting of birds based around the Balfe Harrisons (Ron Scott), the Uncle Sam birds (Ted Chester) and the Watson Pieds (Lou Cooper & Jim Watson), all long distance families that have been blended along the way to produce birds that excel at the hard long distance races. No better distance blood is available than these lines. The Watson Pieds: The Watson Pieds were first brought to Brisbane from the Newcastle area by Lou Cooper. They were made famous by the late Jim Watson, the former President of the QRPF who won the 700 mile Townsville race with a hen he bred down from these Lou Cooper birds. This hen was the first of only two birds home in race time from this very difficult race. Her sire Blue Bar Pied cock 1367 WHC 72 also bred a Goulburn 540 mile Fed winner clocked at 1am and 2nd in the 700 mile Junee Fed, as well as 13th Fed Camden 450 miles clocked at 9.45pm. This pied cock has featured prominently in many of the best long distance winners right up until the present. Uncle Sam: The Uncle Sam or American 1000 mile pigeons were brought to Australia by the Bushell Brothers of Sydney. Ted Chester purchased the Uncle Sam cock as well as his dam and brought them to Brisbane way back in the 1920s. Crossed into the Brisbane pigeons, particularly the Balfe Harrisons they were to dominate long distance racing and their blood line also continues until this day. Balfe Harrisons: The old Balfe Harrisons bred down from via R Scott s Moonlight hen 1118 QRPA 46, this hen was clocked at night from Quilpie 520 miles taking 2 nd Open Fed. She was a daughter of Ron Scott s number one pair and went on to be the dam and grand dam of numerous champion distance birds back in the 1960s. In particular when she was mated to VHA 46,, a cock from Clarrie Latchford and brought to Brisbane by Alan Anderson, they produced a whole line of champion distance birds QPF 59, known as the Beasley Cock but ended up with Eric Paine, was bred down from the famous Moonlight hen of Ron Scott and sired such famous stock as 168 QHS 66, sire of R Scotts Junee Fed winner plus many other top winners WHC 60 the sire of 5594 placed 1 st Fed Townsville for Noel Randall, a hen that can be found in the pedigree of many distance winners of today. These birds were greatly sort after back then and still are by today s astute long distance fanciers. The Grizzle Blood Barry s top distance winning grizzles all trace back to the Grizzle cock 9897 QPF 87 who was placed 1 st Fed Goulburn 540 miles clocked at approximately 10pm at night, to win what was a hard race for Russel Beetham was bred down from Russell s top Grizzle hen 1942 QHS 71 when mated with his No.1 stock cock 519 QPF 80, who sired 1 st Fed Bega 700 miles and 1 st Fed Cobar 540 miles. This pair bred QPF 84 Grizzle cock who was the sire of Only 4 young were bred from 9897 in Barry s loft before he was unfortunately killed by a snake. Of these 54 NIPC 90 went on to breed a number of good race birds and even better stock, 55 was also killed by a snake and 99 NIPC 90 was given back to R Beetham. 99 was placed 18 th Fed Bega 700 miles and equal 3 rd Fed Camden landing 2 minutes behind the Camden Fed winner for Russell and he too has left his mark in the stock loft. 2

Long distance birds preformed better and came home regularly at night and middle distance birds became a lot quicker depending on how much of the above birds blood was in their pedigree. The ABC blood is still producing winners to this day. 818 QPF 99 bred from QPF 87 x an inbred grand daughter of by 374 QPC 74 x 690 QPC & 690 are brother & sister both bred directly from Ref A & B. In 1918 flew the above 1011 miles stage twice viz on June 27 th & July 12 th being the first bird in the world to fly the 1000 mile stage twice in the one season. The last race proved a very disastrous one, Dr Shelling himself losing both birds he sent to that race. Bred and race by Mr Lenz of Fort Wayne Homing Society he is a combination of Dr Schelling s Beach and Nahrwolds 1000 mile strain. Performances: 1917 all stages from Fort Wayne to Abilene 1011 in the fastest time ever flown by a yearling 1918 flew 1000 miles twice in the one season. June 27 th and July 12 th being the first bird in the world to fly this stage twice in the one season. Dr Schelling himself states the performances seem almost incredible even to those who handled the races, know of the facts and can vouch for the record. He processes a wonderful wing, Mr Sandiford who handled this bird on arrival states he never before handled a pigeon for his size with such wide and lengthy flights, which extend almost to the tip of his tail. 4
